Lakeridge’s K-Kids Club is a community service club sponsored by Mercer Island Kiwanis and Lakeridge PTA. K-Kids provides students with an opportunity to learn about organizing projects that help others. Members work together in service to the school and the community. Members develop basic leadership skills and strong moral character.
There are five student elected positions: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Sergeant at Arms. The students learn how to lead and run meetings, how to set agendas and goals, and how to serve and support our community. This Club is led by a team of adult advisors including a Lakeridge staff member, a Kiwanis liaison, and two parent advisors. K-Kids Club is also supported by Mercer Island High School Key Club members, who attend meetings and mentor K-Kids Club members.
All projects in K-Kids Club are generated by its student members – and executed with support from adult advisors and high school Key Club members. K-Kids Club’s focus was homelessness in its first year (2015-16) – executing a successful school wide toiletry drive. All toiletry supplies were donated to Mercer Island Youth and Family Services, and distributed to those in need in neighboring communities. In addition, K-Kids Club planted flowers, made blankets for the homeless, and spent time with our Veterans. In year two (2016-17), K-Kids Club members sought to support a schoolmate with leukemia by designing and selling bracelets. The campaign raised nearly $5,000 for cancer research at Seattle Children’s Hospital. In addition, the effort generated media interest and was featured in the local newspaper, on television news, and online. In year three (2017-18), K-Kids Club coordinated a school-wide Pet Supply Drive, which yielded more than 700 donations and $400+ to support homeless animals at a local shelter: Homeward Pet Adoption Center. The Pet Supply Drive was featured in the local newspaper.
Lakeridge K-Kids Club was recognized by the Mercer Island PTA Council as the “Outstanding Program” of the year for 2018. The Outstanding Program award honors a program designed and implemented to serve the school community or community at large.
